Tuesdays with Romo: Wildcat=Success?

Yes, I made a crude looking design to describe the Dolphins offense for this season.

Miami Dolphins 31 - New York Jets 27- It was a wildcat kind of night for the Dolphins. The game winning touchdown by Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown was in fact via the wildcat.

It was a great game for Chad Henne, as he completed 20-of-26 for 241 yards and two touchdowns.

Brown and Ricky Williams did a great job running the football on Monday night.

On the other side, it was a so-so game for Mark Sanchez. However, we saw Braylon Edwards make a fairly good debut for the Jets. He did catch a touchdown pass and almost got a second one, but after a challenge by Miami, the officials ruled him down at the 1-yard line.

This division just got a bit more interesting after Monday night. The Jets and Patriots aren't running away with the division and Miami took a huge step Monday night to send the message to the AFC East that they aren't going away too soon.

Hump Day: The Loser Rankings- The Aztec Tomb Edition

So here we are with another day for the Losers. However, this week, we're doing something different. We're going to take a look at all the teams that are currently 0-3. Is there hope still or should these teams just jump in the Aztec Tomb. Who's first!?

Miami Dolphins- So the Dolphins have no Chad Pennington for the season and their new starting quarterback is Chad Henne. But wait, the Dolphins traded for Tyler Thigpen on Tuesday.

The Dolphins are in the middle of the pack when it comes to offense and defense ranks. They have back-to-back home games. If the Dolphins split those games, they'll be 1-4 going into the bye week. The remaining non-division schedule includes Pittsburgh and New Orleans. However, the Dolphins also have games against other 0-3 teams like the Bucs, Titans and Panthers.

Verdict: I don't see the Dolphins making the playoffs, but they will win six games. So no tomb for the Dolphins.

Cleveland Browns- Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn? The problem for this team goes much deeper than the quarterback controversy. They're at the bottom of the NFL in offense and 30th defense. Things have gone from bad to worse. The Mangini Magic is not working. They have Cincy this week. The Browns have Green Bay, Chicago and San Diego still on the schedule.

Verdict: Get in the tomb! The Browns will go 2-14.

St. Louis Rams- The Rams are averaging 8 points per game. Steve Spagnulo probably should have held out for a better job. But it is what it is. They get San Francisco and Minnesota next. They have Indy, Chicago and New Orleans still left in their non-division schedule.

Verdict: Rams will go 1-15. I think it's safe for them to get in the tomb.

Tennessee Titans- All three of the Titans losses were by a combined 13 points. They've kept it close, but not close enough. Good news though Titans fans, they face Jacksonville on Sunday. New England and San Diego are on the schedule, as well as the Rams and the Dolphins.

Verdict: This might be the best 0-3 team out of the entire group. They won't win 13 games, but they still have a shot at .500. They do have the ability to go 9-7.

Kansas City Chiefs- They lost to the Raiders, which was their only winnable game. They also lost to Baltimore and Philadelphia (granted it was against Kevin Kolb). They have the Giants and the Cowboys for their next two games. The division isn't very strong (do you really think the Broncos are good enough to win the division?).

Verdict: Todd Haley will be lucky to win seven games for the Chiefs. I see them going 6-10, but no Aztec Box.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Josh Johnson starts on Sunday for the Bucs. There isn't a lot of bright spots for this team. They have Washington and Philly next. They still have the Jets and Patriots.

Verdict: 4-12, go ahead and get in the Aztec Tomb.

Carolina Panthers: Where do I begin? I have no idea what to think about this team. They should be good, but they're not...It's a bye for the Panthers this week (and it comes at a great time). They have Miami, Buffalo, Minnesota and both New York teams. It just doesn't look that good.

Verdict: 5-11, 6-10 sounds possible. I don't see it being any worse than 3-13 though.

I'll have a Loser Ranking next week for sure though.

Tuesdays with Romo: Dolphins win time of possession, but lose game

Indianapolis Colts 27 - Miami Dolphins 23- So the Dolphins had the ball for 45 minutes on Monday night. That's three total quarters for those of you that are not good with mathematics.

Such a long time to have the ball if you ask me. But shouldn't the Dolphins have won the game by like 50? The Colts official time of possession was 14:53. That's seven seconds away from having a full quarter of possession.

The defense should have folded up like a chair from fatigue. The Colts defense somehow managed to survive though.

The game was pretty much back and forth all night. Peyton Manning threw the go-ahead touchdown to rookie Pierre Garcon (The Escargot), a total of 48-yards.

So now the Colts are 2-0 and the Dolphins are 0-2. Manning and the Colts take the road show to Arizona on Sunday night for a showdown with the Cardinals and their own Antique Roadshow, Kurt Warner.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins will travel to San Diego to face the Chargers. If the Dolphins lose in San Diego, they're 0-3. If the "fluke" word isn't coming up now, it will be following the Chargers game on Sunday.

The Mondays: Jason Elam likes to win

Atlanta Falcons 22 - Chicago Bears 20- This was a great game from start to finish. In the end, the Falcons came out on top. Falcons kicker Jason Elam kicked a 48-yard field goal, as time expired, to win the game. Elam missed a 33-yarder two minutes earlier, which gave the ball back to the Bears. After the Kyle Orton touchdown pass to Rashied Davis with 11 seconds left in the game, it looked to be all but over for the Falcons. Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan threw a 26-yard pass to Michael Jenkins with one second left on the clock. Jenkins landed out of bounds with possession. The play led to the Elam field goal. Elam made 5-of-6 field goals on Sunday. Ryan threw for 300 yards for the first time in his NFL career. No doubt this is a huge win for the Falcons. The NFC South is turning into a very tough division. Things are looking up for the NFC South.

Houston Texans 29 - Miami Dolphins 28- A three yard draw by Texans quarterback Matt Schaub made the ultimate difference in the game. Schaub went for it on fourth down and got in for the score. Meanwhile, Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter isn't happy about a blown call by referee Ed Hochuli. The popular ref seems to be having some bad string of luck this season. It's hard to say what's wrong with him. Hopefully he can get back on track, because right now, no team wants to play while Hochuli is reffing.

St. Louis Rams 19 - Washington Redskins 17- A Josh Brown 49-yard field goal gave the Rams their first win of the season. Brown made four field goals on the day. In a way, Sunday was a day for field goal kickers.

Romo Alert: Arizona Cardinals defeat Dallas Cowboys in overtime- The man formerly known as Antonio threw for three touchdowns today, but it wasn't enough to stop the Cardinals.

Sunday Night Recap: San Diego Chargers 30 - New England Patriots 10- Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers had a huge night, last night. Rivers threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns. He had a quarterback rating of 141.9. The big question is, how far will the Patriots fall?

The Mondays: Patriots lose, I'm out of a survival game on Yahoo

Greetings all, another exciting Sunday has come and gone.

Miami Dolphins 38 – New England Patriots 13- Go figure, the one time I take Ronnie Brown out of the line up, he scores five touchdowns, one of them via passing. This is a huge win for the Dolphins. I swear, I never saw it coming. Does this mean trouble for the Patriots? It seems highly unlikely at this point, but if the losing becomes a trend, then Foxboro should prepare for a full-fledged panic attack.

Jacksonville Jaguars 23 - Indianapolis Colts 21- For some strange reason, the Colts and Jags are 1-2. The bigger surprise is the Colts. Wait, the Jags beating the Colts on the road is the bigger surprise. The Colts are now 0-2 in their new stadium. If I'm a Colts fan, I'm slightly concerned.

Buffalo Bills 24 - Oakland Raiders 23- The Raiders surprised me on Sunday. They had a strong chance of walking into Buffalo and knocking off one of the rising AFC teams. Trent Edwards and Marshawn Lynch came through when needed. Rian Lindell made it count and won the game on a field goal as time expired. What becomes of Raiders coach Lane Kiffin? Foxsports.com is reporting that sources have said Lane Kiffin could be fired as early as Monday. The Raiders are falling apart and it is a sad story.

Atlanta Falcons 38 - Kansas City Chiefs 14- Seriously, who saw the Falcons starting the season 2-1? I know it's not much right now, but it's a good start. Matt Ryan is showing some promise. The rookie quarterback threw one touchdown pass on the day, no interceptions. Michael Turner had a good day for the Falcons. The former San Diego Charger rushed for 104 yards and three touchdowns on the day.

SUNDAY NIGHT RECAP/ROMO ALERT: Dallas Cowboys 27 - Green Bay Packers 16- It was pretty much all Cowboys for most of the game. Tony Romo threw for 260 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Aaron Rodgers threw for 290 yards, but no touchdowns.

Losers Rankings: September 16, 2008

Week two has officially past and we are now 1/8 of the way through the 2008 regular season. Yes, I am keeping track. I should be on the loser's rankings. However, I'm not an NFL team. Here are your top five losers for the week.

1. St. Louis Rams- Once again, the Rams were blown apart by an NFC East team and it wasn't a very fun game for them. They're 0-2 and it looks like the Rams won't win a game for a while. One columnist seems to suggest that the Rams bring Dick Vermeil back, except in an executive position.
   
   
2. Detroit Lions- They got blown away by the Packers. Do people still believe that the Lions can win the division? Let me rephrase, did anybody think the Lions would win the division? Anybody? Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?
   
   
3. Miami Dolphins- What is there to say? They won't win next week against the Patriots. Maybe, just maybe they'll move up the charts.
   
   
4. Cincinnati Bengals- Cincy once again winds up in the fourth position. Chris Johnson of the Titans ran over the Cincy defense. The Bengals defense has given up an average of 200 yards rushing in two games. The Bengals offense, once a force to be reckoned with, has scored 17 points in two games. They have the Giants on Sunday and we could be seeing the Bengals start 0-3.
   
   
5. Kansas City Chiefs- The Chiefs have a lot of talent, but it seems as though the walls are crumbling. When you see headlines like these, you can't help but wonder what is wrong with the Chiefs. Plus, what about LJ? At this point, who knows. We don't even know who is starting at quarterback on Sunday.

NFL Picks: Week 1

The 2008 NFL season starts today (at 1 p.m. ET to be exact). We've missed it and we're ready for more football action. Without further ado, time for my picks for week 1.

1. Philadelphia over St. Louis- The Eagles should be ready to go. Sure they don't have Kevin Curtis, but I can't see St. Louis winning on the road.
   
   
2. Jacksonville over Tennessee- Great division game to start the season. I know the Titans have done well against the Jags, but I think things should be different this time around.
   
   
3. New Orleans over Tampa Bay- This seems like a no-brainer to me because the Saints are a much better team than the Bucs. The Saints will be back in the saddle again, to quote Aerosmith.
   
   
4. New York (Jets) over Miami- Miami is coming off of a 1-15 season, need I say more?
   
   
5. Upset Pick: Houston over Pittsburgh- The Texans showed a lot of promise last season. This year could very well be their breakout year and it all starts in Pittsburgh.

NFL Preview Show Extravaganza: Miami Dolphins

Today, we continue our look at the AFC East as we focus on the Miami Dolphins.

What can be said about the Dolphins that hasn't been said already. When you think of the Dolphins, two names come to mind, Marino and Shula. When you look at the 2007 Dolphins, only one thing comes to mind and that's the 1-15 record.

It's been a bad time to be a Dolphins fan. At this point, I'm sure some Dolphin fans are reminiscing about the days that Marino was the quarterback and Shula was the coach.

This season, things are changing in Miami. It started with Bill Parcells being named the Executive VP of Football Operations, which led to Jeff Ireland being named GM, which led to Tony Sparano being named head coach. Now it didn't necessarily happen in that order, but I think you get the point.

The challenge for Parcells is to turn this laughing stock of a team back into division winners. The Dolphins selected and signed Michigan tackle Jake Long with the first overall pick in the NFL draft. Long will try to bring some steadiness to an offensive line that hasn't experienced it in a while.

On Friday, the Dolphins signed former Jets quarterback Chad Pennington. It's a great opportunity to get some veteran leadership on this squad.

The key to this squad has to be Ronnie Brown. Brown started the season strong and had 600 yards and four touchdowns in his first seven games. However, a knee injury ended Brown's season. If Brown can stay healthy, he will make a big impact for the Dolphins in 2008.

The Dolphins open up the regular season at home when they face division foe, the New York Favre's, I mean Jets.

At home, the Dolphins will face San Diego, Oakland and Seattle. On the road, the Dolphins will face Arizona, Houston and Kansas City.

Friday Briefs: The 'Where Will Jason Taylor Go' Game

It's Friday and I don't have to go to school......For a week. Woo, a whole week off from school, only to return for summer school (my choice). With that, I'll also be taking a week off from the blog, barring any huge story breaking in the next week. So for my last post before I head home for the week, I thought I'd play a little game.

With the recent situation surround Jason Taylor and the Miami Dolphins, I figured what the hey; I'll generate some scenarios for where Jason Taylor could end up, in case he is traded or released before June 1.

So.....LET'S PLAY WHERE THE HELL WILL JASON TAYLOR GO......

Kansas City Chiefs

This move makes a lot of sense for the Chiefs. They traded away Jared Allen to the Vikings and need to fill the spot. Could you imagine Tamba Hali and Jason Taylor lining up on the ends with Glenn Dorsey at the defensive tackle spot. I'm getting all tingly just thinking about it. If the Chiefs can pull it off, that would be the biggest acquisition of the off-season.


Washington Redskins

This might be a stretch, but Dan Snyder tried to get Chad Johnson, do not think for two minutes that Snyder won't wheel and deal to try and get Taylor.

New Orleans Saints

This move would make sense for the Saints. They don't have much depth. They also have a lot of salary cap room. Taylor would give a huge boost to a struggling defense. In 2007, Charles Grant and Will Smith combined for a total of 9.5 sacks. Taylor recorded 11 sacks in 2007. I'm not saying it would be enough, but it's better than before.

Carolina Panthers

With the recent retirement of Mike Rucker, the Panthers are pinning their hopes and dreams on Tyler Brayton, who didn't start a game for Oakland in 2007, but still played 16 games. Brayton recorded only nine tackles on the season. Taylor would be a complement to fellow end, Julius Peppers. Peppers recorded a career low, 2.5 sacks in 2007. If Taylor comes to Carolina, it will be one less problem for John Fox to deal with.

Seattle Seahawks

This team is a top ten defense in the NFL. Could you imagine seeing Jason Taylor wearing a Seahawks uniform? It's flabbergasting! This team is stacked with an excellent defense from line, to secondary. Taylor could send the Seahawks to South Florida, come February.

The Mondays: It's all about the team

Happy Monday to all who seek one. Woo, this is the final week for the regular school year. I head home Friday. Then 10 days later, I'll be back for summer school. Don't worry though, I plan on keeping the updates going throughout the summer. Including m preview extravaganza.

Teamwork, Teamwork, Teamwork- Interesting piece in Sunday's Baltimore Sun in regards to how things are going for the Ravens under new coach, John Harbaugh. The first year coach is laying out plans for improving the team, including improving the work ethic. I for one wish coach Harbaugh good luck. I think he's up for the challenge- Baltimore Sun

Johnson easing back in to Chiefs running back spot- The Chiefs are taking it easy on star running back Larry Johnson. Johnson is coming back from a broken foot that he injured at the midway point of the 2007 NFL season. The running back position is one that shouldn't be of much concern for the Chiefs. Kolby Smith stepped in and showed some signs of potential. The Chiefs have bigger issues they need to address, like the defense and the quarterback spot. Only time will tell if the Chiefs will have a good season or not- Kansas City Star

Jason Taylor the new Mr. Hollywood- Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor is becoming a Hollywood star in front of our very own eyes. He's partying it up with the celebrity elite, including wait for it....Denzel Washington! Taylor wants to take the Hollywood route, he's been taking acting classes as well. Hey Jason, if you're looking for a role, I might have a screenplay available for you- Foxsports.com

Bills have lowest average price of tickets in the league- The Bills have the cheapest ticket prices in the NFL. The average is $46.26, $20 less than the league average. The Patriots are #1 in average ticket prices with $90.89- The Buffalo News

Pats start OTA today- Interesting find here by the Reiss' Pieces blog on the Boston Globe web site. The defending AFC champion New England Patriots begin passing camp today. According to the Globe, it's all apart of the OTAs or organized team activity, which takes place before training camp. These OTAs are optional for all players and are allowed by the NFL. Nothing really of note here, just need some filler- Boston Globe

Hump Day: Headin' down the homestretch

Would you believe that we're almost done with our 16 game preview of the 2008 NFL season? Well believe it! On Monday, we gave a look at weeks 11 and 12. Today, we will take a look at weeks 13 and 14.

Week 13 will be significant because that's when Thanksgiving is. Three games are scheduled on Thanksgiving. However, I only plan on profiling one. So I'll give you the other two. They are: Tennessee Titans at Detroit Lions- 12:30 PM ET on CBS and Arizona Cardinals at Philadelphia Eagles- 8:15 PM ET on NFL Network

Here's a look at the rest of week 13...

Week 13- Thurs. Nov. 27, 30 and Dec. 1

Seattle Seahawks at Dallas Cowboys- This will be without a doubt the game to watch as you're going back for seconds. Running back Julius Jones will make his return to Dallas for the first time since signing as a free agent to the Seahawks.

Also of note, this will be the final Thanksgiving Day game in Texas Stadium. Will the tears shed? Not yet! You should expect a great game, nonetheless- 4:15 PM ET on FOX

Indianapolis Colts at Cleveland Browns- This game narrowly beat out the Jaguars and Texans Monday Night game. The Colts are going to Cleveland. In case you haven't heard, it can be pretty cold in late November- 1 PM ET on CBS

Pittsburgh Steelers at New England Patriots- If those Patriots are still undefeated by the time week 13 rolls around, I'll be shocked. You know the rest, Brady vs. Burger-meister- 4:15 PM ET on CBS

Week 14- Thurs. Dec. 4, 7 & 8

Washington Redskins at Baltimore Ravens- Is this really an away game for the Redskins if the drive is only 45 minutes?- 1 PM ET on FOX

Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills (Toronto)- The first game in Canada since......Okay it's the first game in Canada. Could this be the new home of the Bills- 4:05 PM ET on CBS

Dallas Cowboys at Pittsburgh Steelers- Two historic teams clashing at each other. Or as I like to call it, three hours of listening to Joe Buck- 4:15 PM ET on FOX

Yeah I know, it has been a long while since I made my last post. Well, I have a little bit more free time to work with, especially with the NFL draft coming up in a few weeks. Here's some headlines for you fine folks out there.

Bills Everett gets surgery to relieve pain in the neck- Everett had minor surgery on Monday to relieve the pain in his neck from a severe spinal cord injury he had in week one of the 2007 NFL season- NFL.com

Savage close to deal with Browns- Cleveland GM Phil Savage is close to a new contract extension. Savage's contract is set to expire in 2009- ESPN.com

Johnson ready to go for 2008- Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson is ready to go for the 2008 season and believes that he will have a strong year. Johnson was plagued for a good part of the 2007 season with a back injury- The Detroit News

Tuesdays with Romo: Bills Prepare For Showdown With Dolphins

The Buffalo Bills find themselves in a spot where they haven’t been in quite sometime, second place in the AFC East. Granted now, they’ve had that spot for over a month now, but it seems like now the Bills have hit their stride.

The Bills will take their three game winning streak to Miami on Sunday to take on the 0-8 Dolphins. This game could be a challenging one for the Bills.

The Dolphins are in dire need for a first win and as each week passes, the Dolphins can only be more motivated to pick up that first win and not be the first team in NFL history to go 16-0 and 0-16 in the regular season.

Offense Head-to-Head

When it comes to the offense, neither team has scored a lot of points this season. The Bills average just 16 points per game, sixth worst in the NFL and worst in the AFC East. As for the Dolphins, they average about 21 points per game, second place in the AFC East.

The Bills have the worst total offense in the AFC, averaging only 275 yard per game. The Dolphins average 305 yards per game.

If there’s one edge the Bills hold over the Dolphins, it’s in time of possession. The Bills are ninth in the AFC in time of possession, while the Dolphins are the third worst with a time of possession of 28:45.

Defense Head to Head

The Bills hold the edge over the Dolphins in terms of defense. The Bills only are giving up 20 points per game, seventh best in the AFC. The Dolphins give up 31 points per game, tied for worst in the AFC.

The Bills also have more turnovers than the Dolphins. The Bills have 12 interceptions this season, tied for second in the AFC. The Dolphins have only four interceptions, worst in the AFC.

Losman or Edwards?

Questions are being raised as to who would start at quarterback for the Bills on Sunday. Those questions were raised after JP Losman played a great game on Sunday, completing 24 passes for 295 yards and one touchdown.

Edwards was on the bench due to an injury he suffered against the New York Jets, two weeks ago.

The OTHER Rookie Running Back

With all the Rookie of the Year talk about Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch has stepped up significantly for the Bills.

The first round pick from California is fourth in the NFL in rushing yards with 690 and second in rushing attempts with 177. Lynch has also carried the ball the most times without fumbling this season.

On Sunday, Lynch ran for a career high of 153 yards on 29 carries for one touchdown. Lynch has carried the ball at least 20 times in six of eight games this season.

During the Bills three-game winning streak, Lynch has carried the ball 77 times for 317 yards and two touchdowns.

Hump Day: Why Must We Suffer?

Yes it is Wednesday.

It is also two more days until my Birthday. Let's start the celebration early by making fun of some losers in the NFL.

10. San Francisco 49ers- They have no offense. Plus their quarterback Alex Smith is down for the year, at least that's what reports say. I still have faith that they can make the playoffs, but Frank Gore really needs to tear it up on Sunday.

9. New Orleans Saints- Hey they had the week off. They didn't lose. The Saints moved up one spot because they didn't win. (If that makes sense)

8. Minnesota Vikings- They have Adrian Peterson.

7. New York Mets- Why would they be on the Loser Rankings. Easy, they gave up that big lead in the NL East. So quit your crying Met fans, at least I didn't put them at #1.

6. Philadelphia Eagles- What is going on with this team? Osi Umenyora had a blast sacking Donovan McNabb.

1. Chicago Bears- Once again, my favoritism towards Chicago wins out. I knew Brian Griese couldn't save the Bears. Now they get to go into Green Bay on Sunday Night (is Football Night) and get humiliated by John Madden's best friend, Brett Favre.

Hump Day Pt. 1: The Miami Dolphins

We're going to finish up today with the final two teams in the AFC East. First up, the Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins finished the regular season in last place in the AFC East, going 6-10. In the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft, the Dolphins drafted Ohio State WR, Ted Ginn.

They open up the regular season on the road against the Washington Redskins. They'll also face the Steelers, the Eagles and the Browns on the road. At home, the Dolphins will face the Ravens, the Bengals and the Raiders.
